Poor reading, writing and numeracy skills are often a barrier to people finding or progressing in work. In 2009-11 RCS worked with Basic Skills Cymru, Llandrillo College Rhyl and Rhyl Football in the Community (RFITC) to create ‘Strikers’, an innovative learning centre at Rhyl Football Club where Llandrillo College Rhyl and RFITC delivered basic skills learning through the medium of football. We also worked in partnership with Coleg Llandrillo Rhyl and Basic Skills Cymru to create ‘Get Skilled Up’, a programme of basic skills learning embedded within short training courses in retail, business administration and IT, construction, automotive engineering, social care and catering. These learning opportunities helped hundreds of individuals improve their basic skills, and progress to further learning or employment between 2009 and 2011.
